Day 335 Christmas Series: Silent Night -NOT!

December 7, 2015
Day 335

Nothing but complete ear-splitting sonic boom sound waves were set in motion throughout the spirit world. One million atomic bombs could not even come close to the deafening sounds pulsating throughout the entire universe the night the man/God came to the world! The noise throughout the galaxies was chaotic yet melodic, tumultuous yet orderly. Yes, it was a holy night and hence the noise, but silent? I don't think so.

The spirit realm was full blown christmas cantata with a host of angels singing for and to His Glory. But it was also the ugliest, most haunting sounds of screeches and screams from the pit of hell. Jesus was making His move and they did not know what it meant. The angels and demonic forces, equally so, had no idea. It was THE MYSTERY that the Fellowship, the Trinity, kept from all of the spiritual forces from before the creation of the world till the day He was birthed and then murdered.

The moment when Jesus came was beyond, beyond and truly beyond. To the spiritual realm it was fantastical, unheard of, and unimaginable, watching the all powerful empty Himself to be like man.

This Girl is on Fire!

The entire spirit realm watched as the most beautiful, powerful, omniscient noise poured in one end and came out the other end, to the only inhabitable planet, as silence. The intelligent, Ancient of Days, Almighty God, Wonderful Counselor, the Prince of Peace, became a baby's goo-goo, ga-ga. How can it be? He emptied Himself to save us.

This is the walk of Christ. He silently walked to the cross only to have the sound become worse than the birth. As the two men became one on the cross the noise in the spirit realm went off the charts. Jesus created peace and the sounds from hell and the songs from heaven were deafening.

You know this Jesus, you who can not stop smiling or singing! If you find yourself silent, the rocks will do your job. But honestly, His silence was for you to sing and tell of Him. Don't let the opportunity pass you by. He silently came to fill you with something to say. Say it for His sake. (Eph. 2:14-16)

Day 334 Christmas Series: Be Diverse, Please!

December 6, 2015
Day 334

That baby in a manger came not so that we could congregate around our similarities. Or so that we could learn how to become more alike in our style, our theology, our talk, our walk, our ways, or in our manners. He came so that we could fully be as diverse as He made us to be under one God, one Leader, one teacher. That baby in a manger scrambled the categories.

Diversity is scary. Diversity sometimes feels as if we are not in control. This is true - we are not in control. Though diversity is unsettling it is also a clean bill of health! When we are united under Jesus Christ  diversity naturally flows.

There is no need to strive for diversity, under Jesus Christ, it just comes. If you see a constipated christian striving for diversity, run the other way, there should be no straining in christianity. Just look at the Trinity, the three in one performing unique and diverse operations, but fully one.

That baby in a manager came to save and set us free from more than our sins. He came to set us free from our boring version of ourself. Would you please let go and be who you were created to be. The world needs you to be all that! The baby came for you to be free to be you.

Day 333 Christmas Series: Smelly Stable

December 5, 2015
Day 333

There is a magical sense that pulls and drags you to one particular day of the year. Though the moon waxes and wans, the pull never does. Christmas day is full on anticipation with intense emotions, years of nostalgia, a multitude of memories overflowing the stockings and all out expectation tipping the richter scale. Soldiers, hospital patients, college students, business men and women all over the world push to get home for this one day. The plays, the books, the movies, the poems that describe and portray this day are in the millions.

But how did this day with a simple, dirty, dusty, smelly bed holding the wonder of all, become such a holiday as this. This day that went unnoticed is now all up in your grill. The day grabs and demands attention. You will notice Christmas whether you want to or not! But this is not how Christ operates. He revealed Himself to you. This is often what goes unnoticed.

Day 332 Christmas Series: The Waiter

December 4, 2015
Day 332

You sit and you hear every single conversation dripping with plans, excitement, and expectations. Moving to another booth solves nothing. Conversations seem to overflow into your space. You do love all things beautiful, maybe not just now. Your imagination sees the intentional families surrounding lit Christmas trees tucked away in lovely corners lit by lights from the tree and warm flames from the fire. You can still imagine, and you do it well.

The local diner serves lunch and you are hungry. Today, the quaint decorations this town deems worthy for their trees and poles bring painful memories more than can fit into your lonely diner booth. The others in the joint have no idea what you are chewing on beyond your small, green circled, diner plate. No idea.

He no longer chooses to care for you as he promised on that gorgeous summer day. Your plans, excitement and expectations were beyond the flower arrangements and wedding details of that sun lit afternoon. Now the booth is full of you and thoughts of him. You eat your lunch alone at the local diner. The vows did not mention this moment.

You are no longer hungry. Your mind has paid no attention to the scraggly salad and tuna melt you have put in your mouth. Christmas will be different this year. You wonder if bumping down the tree farm's lane to bring back a humble tree is more than you can handle. But maybe, that lane has more than trees. You are just going to see where your car takes you.

To the reader-there is someone at the diner, sitting alone. Would you take time, between bites, to pay attention to those behind, before and around you? They might be alone for introvert's sake but they might also be more alone than they had ever intended. Would you, internally in your heart, lift them up to the Waiter who served them to you? Thanks.

He waits on all the tables.

Day 330 Christmas Series: Riding a Donkey Down Elverson

Chris at Antonio's
December 2, 2015
Day 330

So, are you ready for Christmas?
This question has made my mind swirl. Am I ready for Christmas? I don't know. Are you? I am never quite sure what you mean? Are you asking if I have my decorations up? Or are you asking if I have my gifts ready? It is safe to assume that I should probably answer no. But it's Christmas and I need to keep things on the up and up. So, I answer yes and spare you the millions of thoughts you have just birthed. I am ready but probably not in the way you are asking but in the way I have chosen to prepare.

This question, "am I ready," always gets stuck up there in my noggin. You wouldn't know it. I have become good at simply answering yes. I am literal and I am a thinker. And this combination sucks, big time, especially at a time like this. So my mind races to wonder what you mean versus what I mean and how I should answer. But for Pete's sake, all you are doing is asking a simple Christmas conversation starter. That's all. You are not looking for a philosophical answer. And at this time of year, you don't really have time to hear my response.
Why these picture. Because.

Am I lying when I say yes, if I have not even purchased one item or there are no decorations up? No. Am I answering your question? No. Then, what am I doing? I am just going for the simple while pushing past the complicated. I am opening the shutters to say like a cuckoo clock, no. Us literalists, we've learned a thing or two.

We laugh. A lot!
How am I prepared? Every Christmas I prepare by contemplating. I contemplate the birth, the virgin, the husband, the man/God, the manger, the smells, the donkey, the star, the wise men, the other people, the shepherd. There is always a new twist, something I had never thought of.  I think of the place of vulnerability God allowed Himself to be in. I don't get it. I don't get so much of it. It hardly penetrates into that place that freaks out, that utters a long and enduring WWWWWWWWHHHHHHHAAAAAATTTTT?????????? It is so familiar. So every year I chisel away at the familiarity and beg for the remarkableness of it all.

One christmas I proposed something. Let's find a stable in a field. Let's go and just be and listen to the silence. "Go ahead mom, we'll be having hot chocolate at home." Thank God for my children! I'd be a freaking lunatic riding a donkey through town trying to get the feel, the sense, the aura.  Jesus says the same thing to me, "Lynne, just come back to your living room. Hang out with us there!"  Children......

Day 329 Christmas Series - The Challenged

December 1, 2015
Day 329

Darkness surrounds the Christmas season. Lights are enhanced because of dark nights, dark rooms. The lightning of most of my holiday memories are dark. This is not bad or good, just stating the obvious. It is December, the month with the shortest day, the nights are dark. The silver christmas tree, in the corner, slowly circling with silver foil draped over the branches and highlighted with red and green christmas lights was a tree I liked and didn't like all at the same time. But Grandma Esther, she loved it all the time. It was clean, crisp, and in style and those three adjectives placed it on her favored list.

Esther was a small framed little woman as high as she was wide, stocky little lady with stocky little legs. She wore heels past the safety point of any elderly woman, beyond the obvious reasons to put them back in the closet. To be in style, that was top of her priority list. Every christmas you could depend on the never changing nature or character of the crisp, clean and in style christmas decorations. The elves, the hanging ball that moved and played a christmas tune, the nativity scene, the silver christmas tree, the glass candy dish and the hummels, all a part of the show. But not in excess - for that would not be classy.

I was not the child who could enjoy these objects completely without a fair share of contemplation. There was something melancholy about these decorations. The Christmas Red and Christmas Green were two colors that lured and irritated me all at the same time. Without a blazing fire in the background they simply lacked something. The little brain of this little girl never stopped. Only later in life did I discover my preferences, what I wanted to be surrounded by, and they were not red and green, at least for a while.

Esther and Boots had neighbors who lived in their former farm house. I will never forget one Christmas when they came for a "christmas" visit. It felt like my first horror show. We were all sitting in a circle ready for visitors. But No one warned me. No one had ever explained to me anything about special needs. NO ONE. The little girl wobbling into the room was obviously not right. Later in life she would be wheel bound but today she walked and headed right for me. She not only had problems with walking but she was mentally challenged as well.

She looked so different from other girls. She was scary with those thick eyebrows scanning from one side of her head to the other, drool hanging from her lips and her arms in a dinosaur fashion. She was making a slow bee line towards me and I was trapped, frozen. The pure fear that ran through my body was the beginning of fear at Grandma's house, nothing I had ever experienced in my five years.

Her arm reached out to the top of my head. WHAT WAS SHE DOING?!!!

My brain was racing. It was the curlers, she was going for my stupid curlers. My mom took great pride in my little crop of fine textured hair. She was either using Dippity-Do or plastic curlers to make my small amount of brunette hair do what she wanted it to do. Today, it was curlers. I HATE CURLERS! And the pull and small tug from each stupid circular pointy plastic hurt ten times more as this girl tugged on them. This felt like a slow motion movie, a very bad dream. It was haunting, and yet funny sad all at the same time.

I turned my head, and crawled into my father's arms, I couldn't look. The adults were chuckling, completely unaware of what I needed; just a warning and now a simple explanation of special needs. For all I knew I was hallucinating or someone had let in a monster. I simply did not know. I was embarrassed. But I was also mad, very mad at myself. For I knew she was human and I was being rude.  I would learn her name was Donna.

From that point on going to my grandparents became a fearful thing. I would have nightmares and my grandmother would hop in bed with me as I would call out to her in the middle of the night. This was no small feat, it left me with very little sleeping room.  That single moment, lasting all of five minutes, when she reached out for my curlers, was enough to make years of torment. I wrestled for many years with my fear of Donna.

But God in His mercy had me face this fear and as the years passed I too passed many moments with Donna and her single mother and brother. Donna's walking stopped, she was trapped in a wheelchair and her mother had a lifetime of diapers. Their Christmases were lonely and hard. I would come to know how many quiet, lonely moments, were spent in the their old drafty farmhouse, just the three of them. For many this season is a blur while watching others head fully into nostalgia. They long for beautiful nostalgia. But for them it all adds up to work, aloneness, and work.
